Here are the 3 things that can lead to acne:

- Production of oil (sebum) in abnormal quantities;

- Unbalanced way of shedding dead skin cells;

- Buildup of the bacteria.

Hair follicles that are blocked by oil or dead skin can lead to acne. Sebaceous glands which are linked to each follicle produce sebum, the substance needed to oil the hair and skin. Sebum travels along the hair appearing through the follicle to reach the skin. If the follicle is blocked by to much sebum or dead skin cells, a soft plug forms.

If the hair follicle bulges a whitehead is the result, a blackhead is the result of a dark plug. If a blocked hair follicle becomes infected or inflamed pimples begin to appear. Cysts appear when the hair follicles deep within the skin become infected. Acne does not usually affect the pores if the skin.

The overproduction of sebum is influenced by a number of drugs, hormonal changes, bacteria and heredity. Studies continue to commence in this area to try to determine the precise cause.

It is a common belief that the food plays a major role in the appearance and the development of acne. In fact, the diets do not affect the acne that much. More than that, it is important to know that acne is not provoked by dirt. On the other hand, scrubbing the skin may lead to irritations that cause the acne to become worse.

Although genetic factors or changes in hormone levels resulting in acne cannot be modified, other things can be managed with a view to the prevention of this skin problem. Here is a list:

- Exposure to cosmetics or oily products that harm the skin;

- Irritation of the skin and pressure that is provoked by cell phones, helmets, backpacks or tight collars.

A definite way to prevent skin problems from happening is to source higher quality cosmetics. To ensure you keep acne at bay change your backpack for a messenger bag. Items that cause pressure when kept in a pocket such as cell phones should be kept in a bag instead. As a result, the risk of developing acne decreases considerably and friction and pressure are relieved. Nevertheless, people cannot do much to stop acne when it is carried in the family from one generation to the other. It is advised in this instance to seek medical advice and follow a treatment regime using topical creams and lotions.

The hormonal changes that precede acne are present in:

- Both genders of teenagers;

- Women who are pregnant;

- Women, just before their period;

- Individuals who are on treatment of drugs like cortisone.
