Austria cemetery removes Hitler's parents' gravestone

The tombstone marking the grave of Adolf Hitler's parents, Alois and Klara Hitler, was removed from an Austrian cemetery this week to deter neo-Nazi commemorations of the German dictator.

By The Associated Press

VIENNA -- The tombstone marking the grave of Adolf Hitler's parents, a place of pilgrimage for neo-Nazis, has been removed from an upper Austrian village cemetery at the request of a descendant, and the grave is now available to receive new mortal remains, officials said Friday.

Walter Brunner, mayor of Leonding village, said the stone with the faded black and white portrait photos of Alois and Klara Hitler was taken down Wednesday. Village priest Kurt Pitterschatscher said the rented grave was ready for a new lease.

Asked whether he would have trouble persuading people to let their loved ones share a grave with the parents of a man whose name is a universal epitome of evil, Pitterschatscher said, "I really haven't thought about it."

Pitterschatscher said the black marble marker was removed without ceremony by a stonemason hired by the relative, described as an elderly female descendant of Alois Hitler's first wife, Anna. What's left at the site is a white gravel square and a tree.

He said he did not know the woman personally and did not identify her by name but cited her request for termination of the grave lease as saying she was too old to care for it and tired of it "being used for manifestations of sympathy" for Hitler.

Flowers, wreaths from admirers
Hitler's roots are in Braunau, near Leonding, which is commonly identified as his hometown after the village that he was born in was incorporated into Braunau in 1938. But he and his family moved to Leonding in 1898 when he was 9 and lived there until age 15.

Leonding itself first assumed cult status for his followers after Hitler visited his parents' grave and the nearby family house following the 1938 annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany.

The house now warehouses coffins for the cemetery, and Brunner said in a telephone interview that ? unlike the more than 100-year-old grave ? it did not draw Hitler fans.

Jews protest Hitler shampoo ad in Turkey

Anti-extremist groups say neo-Nazis, sometimes coming in groups, placed flowers and Nazi symbols on the grave.

Robert Eiter, with the Upper Austrian Network Against Racism and Right-Extremism, said the latest incident was on All Saints day, Nov. 1, when an urn was left with the inscription "UnvergeSSlich" ? German for "unforgettable" and alluding to Hitler's SS shock troops.

"A lot of flowers and wreaths were deposited there from people who clearly were admirers," he said. "It had to do with the son and not the parents."

Brunner, the mayor, said he was "happy with the decision," and Eiter said most Leonding residents also supported it.

Austria has moved from its postwar portrayal of being Nazi Germany's first victim to acknowledging that it was Hitler's willing partner. Most young Austrians reject Nazi ideology and condemn the part their parents might have played in the Holocaust.

At the same time, the rightist-populist Freedom Party ? whose supporters range from those disillusioned with more traditional parties to Islamophobes and Holocaust-deniers ? has become Austria's second-strongest political force.

An Anti-Defamation League survey taken this year and published last week said that ? while remaining high ? anti-Semitic attitudes decreased from 30 percent to 28 percent in Austria last year compared to 2009.

Great Example of Customer Service Driving Business | Powell ...

An East Coast supermarket chain shows that a business can generously train its workforce and profit handsomely

615 WegmanFamily2.jpgReutersROCHESTER, N.Y. - Cashiers are barred from interacting with customers until they have completed 40 hours of training. Hundreds of staffers are sent on trips around the U.S. and world to become experts in their products. The company has no mandatory retirement age and has never laid off workers. All profits are reinvested in the company or shared with employees.A doomed Internet startup? Occupy Wall Street fantasy? Bankrupt retailer recently purchased by Walmart? No, a $6.2 billion-a-year, 79-store-supermarket chain with cult-like loyalty among its customers.Wegmans, which operates its 79 stores in New York, Pennsylvania and four other East Coast states, shows that a business can generously train its workforce and profit handsomely.

Privately owned by the Wegman family, the chain employs 42,000 people - 20 times the number who work for Facebook - and defies quarterly-driven Wall Street wisdom. Executives say their most important resource is their workers.

"Our employees are our number one asset, period," said Kevin Stickles, the company's vice-president for human resources. "The first question you ask is: 'Is this the best thing for the employee?' That's a totally different model."

Yet the company is profitable. Its prices are low. And it is lauded for exemplary customer service.

"When you think about employees first, the bottom line is better," Stickles argued. "We want our employees to extend the brand to our customers."

The Wegmans model is simple. A happy, knowledgeable and superbly trained employee creates a better experience for customers. Extraordinary service builds tremendous loyalty. Where, though, is the profit?

High volume, according to company executives. The chain's stores are enormous - usually 80,000 to 120,000 square feet - larger than a typical Whole Foods and roughly double the size of a traditional supermarket. And they feature a dizzying array of 70,000 products, nearly twice the number available in a standard grocery store. Across the East Coast, Wegmans supermarkets have the highest average daily sales volumes in the industry.

Employees are omnipresent in stores and do seem knowledgeable. With little prompting, they launch into exhaustive but friendly accounts of where the meat, fish or produce they sell hails from, what each item tastes like and how best to prepare it.

A fish salesman raved about the exhausting standards of the company's distributor in Alaska. A butcher said he had visited the ranch where a steak came from in Montana. And Maria Benjamin, a 38-year Wegmans veteran, started running a store bakery after managers loved her homemade Italian cookies.

"They let me bake whatever I want," said Benjamin, one of 1,015 people employed at the company's 135,000-foot flagship store in Pittsford, New York. "They're really down-to-earth, wonderful people."

Executives say the company is also able to invest in its employees and focus on steady, strategic growth because it is not publicly traded. They said cutting jobs or shipping them overseas was, in part, the product of having to relentlessly please the stock market.

"Some of that is that public mentality," said Stickles, who has an MBA and once planned to be a stock broker. "The first thing they think about is the quarter. The first thing is that you cut labor."

The Wegman family, which grants few interviews, has owned and run the company since 1916. Robert Wegman, whose father and uncle opened the first store, dramatically expanded the business in the 1970s by being one of the first chains to vastly expand store size, include pharmacies and use bar codes.

Today, the chain is run by Robert's son, Danny, 65, and his two daughters, Colleen, 41, and Nicole, 38. Mary Ellen Burris, a 78-year-old senior vice-president and family confidant, said the owners refuse to open more than three stores a year because "we cannot continue to be the best if we try to go at a faster pace." She said the family has no interest in taking the company public.

"No, absolutely not," Burris said. "It takes away your ability to focus on your people and your customers."

Like other companies, Wegmans has made mistakes. Over the years, it has had to close nine stores that failed to generate adequate revenues. And?critics?have accused it of moving stores out of poor urban neighborhoods and focusing its operations on wealthy suburbs. And while the benefits are generous, its pay rates are good, not extraordinary.

Wegmans has also clearly benefited from being based in?Rochester, a small but historically prosperous area in upstate New York that was the birthplace of Western Union, Kodak, Xerox, Bausch & Lomb and other companies. Wegmans treats its employees well in part to keep them from gravitating to other firms.

Competition has also forced the company to change. The arrival of?Walmart-owned supermarkets caused a sharp reduction in prices in 2004.

"It was clear that people were gravitating to the discount stores," said Jo Natale, the company spokeswoman. "And so we completely changed the way we did our prices."

But she and other executives insisted that Wegmans' real advantage was the company's happy, high-quality workforce. It sends butchers to Colorado, Uruguay and Argentina to learn about beef. It sends deli managers to Wisconsin, Italy, Germany and France to learn about cheese. Last year, it awarded $4.5 million in college scholarships to employees.

The company has half the turnover of its peers. In February,?Fortune?magazine declared it the fourth-best company to work for in America?in 2012. In 2005, it was number one.

"What some companies believe is that you can't grow and treat your people well," Burris told me. "We've proven that you can grow and treat your people well."

Wegmans is a model. It shows that companies can train, innovate and profit at the same time.

On the path to age-defying therapies

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? One of the secrets to a longer, healthier life is simply to eat less. When subjected to calorie restriction (CR), typically defined as a 20-40% reduction in caloric intake with corresponding maintenance of proper nutrition, animals in labs not only live longer, but also have improved insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, both of which decline during aging.

Yet, for all of its benefits, CR's restricted diet is a stumbling block for most Americans. If only we had a drug that could do the same thing.

Well, we do, sort of. The drug rapamycin, which is used for immunosuppression in organ transplantations, mimics the longevity effects of CR and may tap into the same cellular pathway as CR. Unlike CR, however, rapamycin actually impairs glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, two hallmarks of diabetes. Clearly, rapamycin is doing something CR is not.

To understand better rapamycin's benefits and risks, researchers from the lab of Whitehead Institute Member David Sabatini and Joseph Baur, assistant professor of Physiology, at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine, have discovered precisely how rapamycin is behaving at the cellular level. Their intriguing results are published this week in the journal Science.

"We know that despite its adverse effects, rapamycin still prolongs lifespan, so there's a potential that we could make it better by just having lifespan affected and not induce the adverse effects," says Sabatini, who is a professor of biology at MIT and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator. "The data in this paper suggest that it's possible."

Rapamycin, which is also called sirolimus and marketed in the United States as Rapamune, is a known inhibitor of the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1), a protein complex that regulates many cellular processes linked to growth and differentiation. mTORC1 is part of a cellular signaling pathway, called mTOR, which responds to nutrients and growth factors. Mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 2 (mTORC2) is also part of the mTOR pathway and regulates insulin signaling.

Rapamycin has generally been thought to target primarily mTORC1. But work by Dudley Lamming and Lan Ye, co-authors of the Science paper and postdoctoral fellows in the Sabatini and Baur labs respectively, indicates that in mice, rapamycin also inhibits mTORC2, thereby reducing insulin sensitivity.

To see if rapamycin's positive effects on lifespan effects could be separated from its negative metabolic effects, Lamming and Ye bred mice whose mTORC1 activity was partially inhibited but whose mTORC2 activity remained largely intact. The females of this mouse population lived longer than control mice while maintaining normal insulin sensitivity.

"This shows that disrupting mTORC1 alone is capable of extending lifespan, if you can find a way do that," says Lamming.

For Baur, the experiments' results indicate that there is a possibility of identifying a better anti-aging drug than rapamycin.

"Our work highlights the potential utility of molecules that target mTORC1 specifically and suggests there is hope that by targeting this pathway, you could really get something that ameloriates age-related diseases without causing more problems than it solves," says Baur. "If you're taking an anti-aging drug as a preventive measure, you probably don't want to pay the price of diabetes."

This work was supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the American Federation of Aging Research (AFAR), the Institute on Aging at the University of Pennsylvania, the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, the American Heart Association, and the Academy of Finland.

For Palestinian, a reminder of Israeli occupation

Paul Goldman / NBC News

Abu Nidal, 70, stands on his land in the Palestinian village of Al-Walaja. Construction of the Israeli security barrier can be seen in the background.

By Paul Goldman , NBC News

AL-WALAJA, West Bank ?? Palestinian activists are calling for a ?Global March to Jerusalem? this Friday to mark Land Day, an annual event that commemorates the killing of six Arabs who were protesting the Israeli practice of expropriating Arab land to build Jewish settlements on March 30, 1976.

Since then Palestinians have commemorated March 30 as Land Day and have turned it into a general day of protest against what they see as discriminatory practices by the Israeli government.

But 70-year-old Abu Nidal doesn?t need a special calendar day to remind him of the Israeli occupation and their confiscation of his land. Nidal just needs to wake up every morning and look outside his window to see how the Israelis are confiscating his land.

?He lives in the village Al Walaja, nestled in the hills between Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Half of the village of just over 2,000 is considered to be part of Jerusalem and the other half is part of the West Bank. So now the Israeli security wall snakes through the village.

?Land Day is like a music record being played over and over,? he said. ?I live out of despair with no future in sight, I see no light only darkness.?

When the Israelis sent huge yellow bulldozers to the village in 2010 to start working on the separation wall, no one bothered to check on whether or not the wall ran through Nidal?s farm land ? which it does. And it has not only been 86 olive trees that were up rooted by the approximately?26-foot high concrete barrier, but also Nidal?s family graveyard.

Paul Goldman / NBC News

Parts of the Israeli security wall are still under construction, while others are already snaking through the West Bank village Al-Walaja.

It was his grandmother?s wish that every family member be buried on their 11-acre farm land. But the Israelis have a different plan for the confiscated land. They are planning to build not only the wall, but a recreational park for Israelis on the other side of the wall.
As it stands now, Nidal can only look at his mother and grandmother?s graves from a distance with the dreadful knowledge that soon the wall will be his only view.

?It?s not only a question of land confiscation, but also of making our life so miserable that we will have to pack up our lives and leave,? Nidal said. ?But, of course, I want to be buried alongside my mother.?

This Friday when demonstrators take to the streets commemorating Land Day, Nidal won?t join them; his battle is being waged in the Israeli courts. But he pointed out that his case doesn?t have much of a shot. ?The court is Israeli, the judge is Israeli and the lawyers are Israelis.? It?s a losing battle.?

Nidal?s story is just one out of many. There are approximately 2,300 Palestinians living in the village of Al Walaja and everyone I talked to had a similarly desperate story. The common theme to all the stories is the feeling they live in a prison surrounded by a wall and Jewish settlements.

AMD's G-Series APUs now come with Integrity, other ethical constructs due later

Image
AMD's G-Series APUs are the type of chips that'll nurse one pint of power at the bar for hours on end, driving set top boxes, medical equipment and tablet-style devices. Now the manufacturer's adding the equally sensible Integrity real-time operating system from Green Hills Software to the platform. The super-stable RTOS has previously been available as part of the Cortex A15 lineup, but these new chips combine a multi-core x86 CPU and GPU that'll be used in industrial control systems where accuracy is paramount. If you're on the hunt for some silicon to drive your production line robots, head on past the break for the deep dish.

Karuma PlayBase Plus

So your new iPad ($499-$829, 4.5 stars) is finally here and everyone wants in?including your kids. You could hand over your shiny, expensive tablet and trust they'll handle it with care, or nervously follow them, ready to catch the delicate slate should it slip out of their tiny grasp. Better yet, you could invest in an inexpensive secondary tablet made specifically for kids. The Karuma PlayBase Plus ($229 direct) is built for children with a rubber bumper, antimicrobial screen, and some options for gated play in a child-friendly tablet environment. Unfortunately, the PlayBase Plus comes with performance and responsiveness issues, a poor screen, and a lack of pre-loaded child-friendly content. And it's more expensive than the Amazon Kindle Fire ($199, 4 stars), which has plenty of protective case options and child-friendly apps to choose from.

Design and Features
Compared with other kid-friendly tablets, the PlayBase Plus feels slicker, but more solid. The frame uses a combination of plastic and metal, measuring only 8 by 4.8 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and 11.5 ounces. It's much thinner and lighter than the kid-geared Fuhu Nabi Tablet ($199, 3 stars), which measures 10.6 by 7.7 by 3.5 inches and weighs 1.2 pounds. Much like the Nabi, the PlayBase Plus ships with a removable bumper, which the company claims is constructed from medical-grade silicone. The bumper on the PlayBase Plus is smaller and slimmer, which isn't necessarily a good thing, and is a bit too easy to remove?tempting kids to ditch the cover altogether. The Vinci Tab ($389, 2.5 stars) is more rugged, with a non-removable rubberized bumper surrounding the tablet.

The 7-inch screen on the PlayBase Plus is a big disappointment, with its low 800-by-480-pixel resolution. It's the same as the Vinci Tab, but much lower than the 1,024-by-600-pixel same-size screen on the Kindle Fire. The screen is laminated with a scratch-resistant and germ-fighting antimicrobial plastic film?both boons for a tablet for kids. The lamination gives the screen a dull and grainy quality, though, and the viewing angle is very narrow.?

A 0.3-megapixel camera sits in the bezel above the screen, but the protective laminate partially covers the lens opening, making for one of the worst tablet cameras I've ever seen. Every picture is washed out, with distorted colors, and plenty of image noise?it would take an extremely optimistic child with a powerful imagination to get any good use out of this camera. There is no rear-facing camera.

Along the edges of the PlayBase Plus, you'll find Volume and Power buttons along with a 3.5mm headphone jack, microUSB port, and a microSD card slot. On the bottom bezel, when held in portrait mode, are capacitive Menu, Home, and Back buttons.?

Performance and Child-Safe Environment
The PlayBase Plus is powered by a single-core 1.2GHz A8 processor, with 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage. With those specs, I don't expect spectacular performance, but given the tablet's target audience it's understandable. In my tests, the PlayBase Plus was frequently slow and unresponsive?to the point where I could see it frustrating an impatient child. Apps often take a few seconds to load, and crashes were fairly routine during testing.

The core software is Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but the makers of the PlayBase Plus made a lot of modifications and additions for kids. Animations are more exaggerated, especially when flipping through the eight home screens, but the tablet's subpar components make the animations very choppy. ?A five-icon launcher bar sits at the bottom of the screen, with shortcuts to Downloads, Explorer, All Apps, Browser, and Settings. Downloads takes you to your current app downloads from either the Google Play market or the preloaded Soc.io Mall app?a third-party app market that, disappointingly, doesn?t even offer a clear selection of children's apps. Explorer opens a file-management app, which seems like overkill on a kid-centric tablet. The initial environment is completely open and accessible to anyone using the tablet. It is not until you configure the SafePlay app and Net Nanny Browser that you get to the child-safe features.

And the execution thereof isn't great. Unlike the Nabi, which has two very distinct modes, and makes it difficult to switch between them, the only thing separating the child and adult modes is a child lock, which is a prompt to type two randomly generated numbers. The Nabi also pre-loads plenty of educational apps, games, books, and other kid-friendly content?something missing entirely from the PlayBase Plus. Even the Vinci Tab, which we knocked for a lack of kid-friendly content, offers more than the PlayBase Plus.

Battery life leaves something to be desired too, as the PlayBase Plus turned in just 3 hours, 14 minutes in our continuous video playback test?a good deal shy of the Kindle Fire's 4 hours, 55 minutes. ?

Conclusions
Though its overall construction and feel make the PlayBase Plus seem like a potential contender, its subpar performance, lack of content, and poorly executed child-safe environment make it a very tough sell. The $229 price tag might seem attractive, but you'd be better served with a $200 Amazon Kindle Fire, a sturdy case, and one of the child-locking app options available in the Amazon App Store. The Fuhu Nabi is $199, and though it suffers from similar performance hiccups, it makes up for it with quality child-friendly content (most of which is free and pre-loaded) and a far better child-safe environment. The LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer ($99.99, 4 stars) has less traditional tablet functionality, but would still be preferable over the PlayBase Plus, with a lot more pre-loaded content and a more reasonable price tag.

Loans | Mortgage And Refinance Mortgage Loans For Home ...

March 27, 2012 ? 3:08 am

Depending on your situation you may need to resort to a mortgage loan or a refinance mortgage loan. You may also be able to resort to home equity loans in order to finance home improvements and both home equity loans and refinance mortgage loans will be guaranteed with the available equity on your loan in order to keep rates low.

Home Equity Loans

Home equity loans resort to equity in order to provide the needed guarantee to allow the lender to provide better loan terms. Equity is the difference between the market value of a real estate property and the amount of debt that the property secures (usually a home mortgage balance). This guarantee reduces the risk for the lender with many benefits for the borrower too.

Home equity loans provide loan terms almost as advantageous as those of home loans. With home equity loans you can obtain lower interest rates, higher loan amounts, longer repayment programs and lower monthly payments compared to unsecured loans. All of this is particularly beneficial when it comes to home improvements.

Refinance Home Loans

Refinancing a home loan consists on taking a mortgage loan and using the money to repay the previous loan. The same property is used because, once the loan is obtained, the previous mortgage is fully paid off and canceled. If the new loan provides a higher amount than the remaining of the previous mortgage debt, the additional cash can be used for any purpose, including home improvements.

These loans are known as cash-out refinance home loans and the extra cash has obviously the same loan terms as the rest of the loan which implies extremely low interest rates, low monthly payments, a flexible repayment schedule and high loan amounts. All of which are especially beneficial for home improvements.

Home Improvements Purpose

As long as the money is used for home improvements, lenders can provide you with promotional interest rates and other advantageous terms. This is due to the fact that when used for home improvements the money that the lender grants contributes to increasing the value of the property that is being used as collateral for the loan.

Thus, don?t forget to mention the fact that you are planning to make home improvements when you request loan quotes from different lenders as they might be able to offer you special loan programs to suit your needs. More and more lenders are designing exclusive loan programs for home improvements in order to attract customers who need finance for that particular purpose.

Also, don?t forget not to go with the first offer you receive. Instead, compare loan quotes from different lenders paying special attention to the APRs and the loan terms that most concern you (repayment program and loan amount). That way, you?ll be able to get the best terms on your home improvement loan.

Apple now rejecting apps that access UDIDs

In another indication that Apple is taking privacy concerns - and government scrutiny - seriously, the company is beginning to reject apps that access UDIDs.

While Apple first gave notice of its intention to developers more than six months ago, the company is acting more quickly than expected. Perhaps Apple is self-policing its practices before any external mandate or pressure. Regardless, developers are feeling the impact.

?Everyone?s scrambling to get something into place,? Victor Rubba, chief executive of Fluik, a Canadian developer that makes games like Office Jerk and Plumber Crack, told TechCrunch. ?We?re trying to be proactive and we?ve already moved to an alternative scheme.? Rubba said he isn?t sending any updates until he sees how the situation shakes out in the next few days.

The developers most impacted will be ad networks, game networks, app testing systems like TestFlight, and analytics providers.

Bristol Builders and Best Home Remodelling Ideas to Consider ...

A house extension is actually one of the best investments you can make. The beauty of a new loft conversion, a renovated garage or basement or even a newly built conservatory cannot be matched by anything. The satisfaction it brings you is unparalleled. The beauty of your home can be a testament to your happiness, contentment and success. Even if you do not have a lot of money, a beautiful home is enough for you to feel successful.

But do not think that you are only spending money on hiring builders and having your home converted. Adding space and having a loft conversion is actually rewarding. It can increase the value of your home. Should you decide to sell it in the future, you will not have a hard time doing so. A lot of buyers prefer houses with room extensions. They will go the extra mile to acquire. Homes with house extensions in Bristol can be easily sold in the market at a very reasonable price so you can actually make profit out of it.

Before hiring Bristol builders, find out what the best remodelling idea is suitable for your home first. A highly recommended extension is a conservatory. This can also be called a sun room. A conservatory is an extra room in the house surrounded with lots of windows. This is going to be one of the breeziest and sunniest places in the house. It can be turned into an extra living room, a study room, a recreation room or even an inspiration room. If you are fond of going on vacations, this is also a good investment. You do not have to go far to get much needed rest and relaxation. You can simply enjoy your staycation in your conservatory.

Another wonderful home extensions idea is a loft conversion. ?Your loft can be turned into an extra bedroom for guests. For those people with a growing family, you can easily transform this to a room that can be used by your additional family member. Parents can also turn their loft into a recreation room for their kids. Put your entertainment centre here or turn this into a study area. Kids will definitely appreciate the privacy that this room can give them.

Home remodelling does not always have to mean adding extra rooms or extension rooms. You can hire Bristol builders just to have your existing rooms re made or re fitted. This is actually a good idea if you are on a limited budget. Hire builders to transform your ordinary bathroom into a luxurious one. Never underestimate a beautiful bathroom. It can actually increase your comfort and get rid of stress. To modern day people, this is definitely priceless.

For kitchen lovers, have your kitchen refitted. Builders can change countertops, tiles and cabinet. Get rid of your old rickety overhead cabinets and have the whole kitchen transformed by opting for more reliable wooden cabinets. You can also have your very own kitchen island installed for your cooking comfort.

Garages, these days, are not only used to store cars. Many people also use this as an extra storage room. But do not just stop there. Do not scatter your home decorating equipment in the garage. Turn this into a beautiful living space as well. Have the builder create division in the garage so you have space for your car and ample space for seating areas. With home interior design and decoration, you can turn this into a two in one room.

If you like organizing parties or throwing parties in your home, a conservatory turned into a kitchen should be a wonderful house extension or home remodelling idea. Sun coming in the room and making your airy kitchen look light and fresh is indeed a balm to the spirit. You can use this room not only to cook but to entertain friends and guests as well.

There are actually a lot of house extensions Bristol ideas that you can try. It is important to know how to invest your money properly. Do not just spend on meaningless expenditures. Make sure your investments offer permanent results. Consider hiring Bristol builders to have loft conversion Bristol or any kind of home remodelling idea you have in mind.

Hot Industry for Start-Ups: Construction?

by Sarah Needlemam

One usually thinks of start-ups as cutting-edge. But it turns out the hottest growth area for new businesses isn't so sexy: It's construction.

More entrepreneurs are setting up construction companies, according to a report released earlier this week. The increase comes as construction workers who lost their jobs during the slump in the housing market start their own businesses, taking advantage of a recent uptick in home remodeling and a modest boost in new home construction.

"Improvements in home building last year meant that new construction firms were not swimming against as strong a current as in the previous four years," says Stuart G. Hoffman, chief economist for the PNC Financial Services Group in Pittsburgh.

New entrepreneurs entering construction accounted for 24% of all U.S. entrepreneurial activity in 2011, a year when overall business creation dropped by about 6%, according to recent estimates by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, a nonprofit organization that studies entrepreneurship.

The rate of entrepreneurial activity in construction was 1.7% in 2011, up from 1.6% in 2010 and 1.2% in 2007, the Kauffman report says. The activity rate is a measure of the percentage of the adult, non-business-owner population that starts a business each month, using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Kauffman says. The construction category includes restoration, remodeling and painting firms, in both commercial and residential markets.

Billy Kern of Raleigh, N.C., says he struck out on his own as a general contractor after he was laid off from a small construction company in 2009. Last year, he bought a Mr. Handyman franchise. "I figured I'd stay with my strengths," says the 49-year-old, rather than try a career in a new field.

Employment in construction increased on a seasonally adjusted basis to 5.5 million in December 2011 from 5.4 million a year earlier, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But the industry still has a far way to go to reach prerecession levels: In 2006, monthly measurements of construction employment surpassed seven million.

Overall, services businesses represent the biggest slice of the U.S. economy, as they have for more than a decade. The services sector accounted for 54% of all start-ups last year, Kauffman says. But the rate of entrepreneurial activity in services?which ranges from accounting and consulting businesses to beauty salons and graphic-design shops?held steady in 2011 at just 0.4%, about the same as in 2010 as well as in 2007, according to Kauffman.

The 2011 rate of entrepreneurial activity in all industries was 5% higher than the rate before the recession started, the Kansas City, Mo., research group says.

Of course, measuring entrepreneurship is somewhat tricky. A study released in January from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor found that the number of Americans actively engaged in starting or running a new business increased 60% last year from 2010. But that study measured a wider pool of new business owners, including entrepreneurs with businesses up to three-and-a-half years old, as well as those just starting out.

"We're looking at the people that are in the process of starting a business and haven't yet paid salaries to themselves or employees, so they may not identify themselves yet as self employed," says Donna Kelley, lead author of the GEM report and an associate professor of entrepreneurship at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass.

Meanwhile, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics says self-employed Americans with incorporated and non-incorporated businesses declined 2% last year.

"Any new business is always swimming against the tide in terms of survival," PNC Financial Services' Mr. Hoffman says.

There have been some positive signs for construction start-ups. Spending on additions and alterations to single-family homes rose to $116 billion in 2011 from $112 billion in 2009, according to the National Association of Home Builders.

Remodeling work, which in past years typically represented just one quarter of spending on new construction, now has surpassed overall spending on new construction, the trade group says.

Multiunit housing construction also picked up in 2011, and single-unit housing construction is expected to improve, as well, with new permits for the latter category rising to 472,000 in February from 382,000 a year earlier, according to data from the Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Matthew Hopkins of Thomaston, Conn., says he launched a home and business remodeling company last year after he was laid off from a large highway-construction company in 2010.

"It's something I know well. It's what I'm trained to do," says the 25-year-old.

Mr. Hopkins says "things are looking up," even though he isn't earning as much with his own business as he did as an employee.

"My niche is to do a lot of small jobs. There's a lot of work to be done if you're willing to do the little odds and ends," he says.

Manning starts sorting out life as NFL free agent

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Peyton Manning is getting an early glimpse into life as a free agent.

Hours after a tearful, trying farewell news conference in Indianapolis, Manning flew back to his home in Miami and was immediately peppered with questions about his next landing spot. He'd better get used to it. The scene is likely to play out at every destination he visits until he decides where to play next season.

"I haven't thought about teams and I don't know who is interested, I really don't. This is all new to me," Manning said. "I think my agent has been getting calls at 4 o'clock today since this started. I haven't talked to him because I literally just got off the plane and am ready to start back on my training again because that's what I need to do."

If Manning is healthy, he'll be the hottest commodity to hit the open market in decades: a Super Bowl-winning quarterback with Hall of Fame credentials.

After the Colts decided not to pick up Manning's $28 million bonus, team owner Jim Irsay ended months of speculation by releasing the 14-year veteran and longtime face of the franchise. Indianapolis is likely to find Manning's replacement in April's draft, presumably Stanford's Andrew Luck; the Colts have the first overall pick.

For Manning, Irsay and Colts fans, it was heart-wrenching saying goodbye.

Irsay and Manning exchanged hugs, laughs and even took turns fighting back tears during a news conference at the Colts' team complex. The room is normally used for celebrations such as hiring coaches or general managers or retirements, and it's decorated with banners of the Colts' greatest players. Manning's banner is flanked by two Hall of Famers, Eric Dickerson and John Mackey.

But this was a sad occasion, filled with emotion.

"I do love it here, I love the fans and I will always enjoy having played for such a great team. I will leave the Colts with nothing but good thoughts and gratitude to Jim, the organization, my teammates, the media and especially the fans," Manning said, his voice cracking. "As I go, I go with just a few words left to say. A few words I want to address to Colts fans everywhere. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart. I truly have enjoyed being your quarterback."

At age 35, the man who won one Super Bowl, a record four MVP awards and who helped the Colts land a new stadium and the city's first Super Bowl is starting over.

Gone will be his longtime friends and teammates and the system he perfected. Manning knew the Colts' offense so well, he could literally point out a flaw in the defense, flap his arms, bark new play calls and signal the changes to teammates ? usually before the play clock expired. Gone, too, will be the familiar No. 18 in blue and white. Irsay promised no Colts' player would wear that number again.

Instead, Manning must learn the proper free-agent etiquette.

"I have no idea who wants me, what team wants me, how this process works. I don't know if it's like college recruiting where you go take visits," he said. "I mean, this is all so new to me. The Indianapolis Colts are the only team that I've ever played for, the only team I ever worked out for."

Workouts will almost certainly be part of the process as Manning attempts to prove he can perform like his old self after missing the entire 2011 season because of a damaged nerve that caused weakness in his right arm. He had the most recent of his multiple neck surgeries Sept. 8.

On Wednesday, Manning insisted he's closer than ever to being 100 percent though he's not completely recovered. Even Irsay acknowledged Manning is on the mend.

"I'm throwing it pretty well. I still have some progress to make, but I've come a long way," Manning said. "That's been the most fun part is being back out there on the field. I'm doing better, I continue to work hard and hope to continue making progress."

If he does, there will be plenty of suitors lining up for Manning.

Kansas City coach Romeo Crennel has already said he's interested. At the recent NFL scouting combine in Indy, Miami coach Joe Philbin didn't provide a name but certainly described a player matching Manning's profile when asked what he was looking for in a quarterback. Jets coach Rex Ryan has said his team had already looked at 10 free-agent quarterbacks, and you can bet he'll take a peek at No. 11, too.

Other rumored destinations include Arizona, Seattle and Washington.

Manning said he does not have a favorite and isn't even sure who has already called his agent, Tom Condon, who did not return messages left Wednesday by The Associated Press.

Seeing Manning in any logo other than Colts' trademark horseshoe will be hard to fathom.

"It's going to be awkward especially if he ends up in the division and we have to play him a couple of times a year. It's not going to look right. It's going to be like seeing Joe Montana in a Chiefs uniform," said IndyCar driver Ed Carpenter, an Indianapolis native who has been attending Colts games since Jeff George was the starting quarterback. "Hopefully, he'll perform better than Joe did in the Chiefs uniform."

Irsay said Wednesday he believes Manning will return to form. So does Bill Polian, who drafted Manning with the No. 1 pick in 1998.

So why not keep Manning?

It just didn't make sense.

The Colts are embarking on an ambitious rebuilding project following a dismal 2-14 season, Indy's worst in two decades, and want their rookie quarterback to start immediately. Luck is considered the most NFL-ready college quarterback since Manning entered the league.

Manning, meanwhile, is entering the twilight of his career and wants to chase a second Super Bowl ring, something Irsay didn't believe was feasible in Indy.

"I just think that as a franchise where we are right now with the salary cap and where we are rebuilding, we are definitely a few years away," Irsay said. "I want to see him (Manning) come back and play great. There is no question about it. It is just that here, just like in 2001 when he was completely healthy and everything else, we didn't have everything to surround him. I want that opportunity for him, as well, to succeed at the end of his career."

Irsay and Manning both insisted money was not the issue.

And if Manning winds up in the right spot, the man with 50,000 yards passing, 399 career touchdowns, a 227-game streak of starts and 11 Pro Bowl appearances may finally get that second Super Bowl ring.

"I truly missed just playing quarterback this year," Manning said. "I've done it for such a long time and I love everything about it, and I realize that I'm not going to play forever, and I think I'm going to know the time to stop playing. But right now, I still want to play. I want to get back out there and play. I don't feel like everybody will say, 'He has to do this' or 'He has to prove that.' I don't feel that way. I know how much I love being a quarterback and love football and I want to go play again."

Sperm can do 'calculus' to calculate calcium dynamics and react accordingly

ScienceDaily (Mar. 7, 2012) ? Sperm have only one aim: to find the egg. The egg supports the sperm in their quest by emitting attractants. Calcium ions determine the beating pattern of the sperm tail which enables the sperm to move. Together with colleagues from the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Dresden and the University of G?ttingen, scientists from the Caesar Research Centre in Bonn, an institute of the Max Planck Society, have discovered that sperm only react to changes in calcium concentration but not to the calcium concentration itself. Probably sperm make this calculation so that they remain capable of maneuvering even in the presence of high calcium concentrations.

The swimming path on which sperm follow the mating call of the egg, varies according to species. Sperm -- in particular those of marine species -- swim along convoluted paths in a chemical concentration gradient. Their swimming style is controlled by the calcium ions in the sperm tail. It was previously believed that in high calcium concentrations, the sperm tails make asymmetrical, whip-like movements and their swimming path is very curved, while in low calcium concentrations, the tails beat symmetrically and the sperm swim on a straight line. The alternation of high and low calcium concentrations was thought to propel sperm along spiral-shaped swimming paths. However, this simple model was repudiated by experiments on freely-swimming sperm and presented researchers with something of a mystery.

The scientists have now succeeded in solving this mystery. Using ingenious stroboscopic laser illumination -- similar to that used in 1980s discotheques -- project leader Luis Alvarez was able to trace the movement of a sperm in detail, and simultaneously measure the changes in the calcium concentration. The result was astonishing: the sperm tail only reacted to the time derivative of the calcium concentration and the absolute concentration was of little relevance. To put it simply: sperm can count! Exactly how they do this is unclear. The Caesar scientists suspect that sperm bind calcium ions with the help of two proteins and in thereby create a "chemical derivative," so to speak.

But why do sperm carry out this complicated kind of calculation that we first encounter at upper secondary school level? The concentration of the attractants and, therefore also, the calcium concentration in the sperm is very high near the egg. The mathematical trick probably enables the sperm to be able to react even in the presence of such high calcium concentrations.

Apart from calcium, many other messenger substances control cell functions. Is it possible, therefore, that cells also carry out complex chemical calculations involving other messenger substances? The Bonn scientists would like to investigate this important question next.

Savvy Canadian Baby Boomers Snap Up Palm Springs Real Estate ...

La Quinta, California (PRWEB) October 25, 2011

Brad Schmett, Broker Associate with Luxury Homes by Keller Williams and real estate expert, has announced today that savvy Canadian baby boomers are buying real estate in Palm Springs, California at a feverish pace. Advantageous economic factors on both sides of the border, coupled with a trend in lifestyle change, has combined to make now the most opportune time for Canadian ?boomers? to buy Palm Springs real estate.

Brad Schmett, an expert in both Palm Springs real estate and La Quinta real estate, devotes a considerable portion of his time helping Canadian home buyers maximize their real estate investment. Through his many years in the real estate industry, Schmett has earned a reputation for providing the highest level of service to his clients.

According to Schmett, ?November 1 marks the launch of our annual ?season? here in Palm Springs and we?re already seeing far more Canadians arrive, to buy vacation properties and second homes, than what we?re accustomed to seeing at the start of our season.?

A strong Canadian dollar coupled with a weak Southern California real estate market, has made real estate in Palm Springs a prime target for Canadians looking to take advantage of market conditions. ?Many of my clients are Canadian baby boomers with a fair amount of cash to invest and they?re not totally comfortable with the stock market. They look to Palm Springs real estate as their investment of choice because there are so many incredible properties available ? at rock-bottom prices,? says Schmett.

Brad Schmett, a broker with over 25 years of business experience, has acquired a keen understanding of the needs and concerns of his clients, in particular his Canadian clientele. Schmett says, ?With my Canadian baby boomer clients, the trend is for them to sell their large, primary residence in Canada, move into a smaller property or condominium at home, and then buy a second home here in Palm Springs. They want to slow down and enjoy life more ? and they see Palm Springs as a great place to retreat to with family and friends, especially during the blustery, cold Canadian winter.?

The lowest real estate prices in over a decade, coupled with a high inventory level of both Palm Springs homes and La Quinta homes for sale, has given Canadian buyers more options than ever before in the greater Palm Springs, California real estate market. Schmett urges, ?Canadians may never see the likes of this type of buying opportunity in our lifetimes again. Now is definitely a phenomenal time to buy Palm Springs real estate.?

International 4G equipped iPads showing up in Apple?s inventory

iPads equipped with 4G are showing up in Apple's inventory ahead of the iPad 3 event according to a 9to5Mac source. This would mean that 4G would not only be for US models, but international models as well. This lines up with our recent prediction that the iPad 3 would indeed be equipped with LTE.
